To celebrate the release of 'Under Cover of Dark,' I have Juanita Kees on my blog today. Juanita not only edited my last two books but is an all round fantastic person. I'm so glad we connected when we did. Okay lovely lady, have a seat and get comfy before we find out more about you.If your friends were asked to describe yourself in three words, what would they be?
Wine-drinking serial hugger.
No argument from me on that one.
When did you fall in love...with writing?
From the first moment I held a pencil in my hand. Dad was a great storyteller and loved reading to my sister and I, so it was inevitable I would have a love affair with books. I wrote the first draft of Fly Away Peta at the tender age of sixteen.
Are you a plotter or fly by the seat of your pants writer?
I am a fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants writer. I let my characters have their own way until we hit a snag or a saggy middle, then I go back and review.
What do you love most about the genre you write?
I love action, adventure, mystery and suspense. Real life isn’t without its speed humps and neither should a good story be. It’s the ebb and flow of conflict that makes a good read … and of course the making up! *winks*
Share the titles of three books on your bedside table.
Rocking Horse Hill by Cathryn Hein
Fighter Boy by Ann B Harrison J - Oh you sweet thing you!
Greek Affairs – Tempted by the Tycoon by Kate Hewitt, Annie West and Katherine Garbera
What fears do you face with the release of each book?
I’m always terrified readers won’t enjoy the story. - I doubt you will have that problem :)
What makes you happy?
Wine and chocolate! I love spending time in my garden and with my family. Reading a good book makes me happy too.
Do you set yourself strict rules while you're writing?
I tend to let creativity have its own way. Sometimes the inspiration isn’t there but I force myself to write, even if I delete the whole scene later. I work best alone and in silence, no music or chatter. My favourite writing time is the days I’m alone at home with the dog. She’s a great companion and silent critique partner J
Tell us a something about yourself that is not in your author bio.
I have a shoe fetish!
Tell us about your new release? Give us an excerpt please.
New Australian romantic suspense follows Under the Hood, about a Western Australian drug gang, the teenagers they recruit, and the cop who wants to bring them down.
When Mark Johnson delves deeper into his investigation into the murder of Tiny Watts, and the involvement of a teenage gang with sleazy lawyer Gino Bennetti and his drug world ties, the last thing he expects is to be interviewing Gino’s widow, a woman in a world of trouble.
When her husband is shot and killed, it is both a relief and a disaster. Lily has her son to protect and secrets that run deeper than the scars she bears. Mark Johnson is the last person she wants uncovering those secrets, especially the truth about her son Luke’s involvement in Tiny Watts’s murder.
As the investigation continues and Lily’s wounds begin to heal, she finds the detective easy to trust and the friendship between them blossoms into more. But the secret Lily holds places everyone in very real danger. When it is finally revealed, Lily will lose everything: her son, the man she’s grown to love, her freedom and her life.
He held out a hand to help her down as he watched the expressions flit across her face. Sadness, defeat and hopelessness tugged her mouth. Exhaustion added to the grey of her face. She swayed and leaned into his touch.
Mark realised he was in trouble as he watched tears form on her grubby cheeks. The sight of them hurt. The thought of what had brought her to this point seared his gut. Right now, he didn’t want to ponder on why he felt that way. All he was prepared to acknowledge was that falling for Lily Bennetti right now would be a big mistake. The feel of her body against his, the rightness of it and this godforsaken need to protect her placed him way out of his league. Yet he couldn’t deny her the comfort, nor could he deny himself the pleasure of giving it.
His arm slipped around her shoulders to hug her close for a brief moment before guiding her away from the ruins of her life.
Thanks Juanita for sharing so much with us today. I can't wait for this book having loved the first one!
